It’s All Fun and Games Until… Part I: …Someone Goes Hungry

It would never do to leave the humans and their friends unmolested too long, so Sigyn and I have returned to the gaming gathering.  I’m a mite peckish, dearest–how about you?  Remember last year, there were sandwiches and chips and cookies, and lots of fresh fruit and all manner of good things to eat?

(Sniff, sniff)  Mmmm.  Chicken!  Someone has fetched a large order of chicken fingers from the local fingery.  I can’t wait to have so–  What’s this?!  I hope you like crumbs, Sigyn, because that’s all the greedy piglets have left us.

Very well, we shall just feast upon dessert.  Sweet Glittering Bifrost!  Either the Knittery Friend has failed to bring the expected tribute of a big batch of delicious Family Secret Cookies, or the human female has already gobbled them up.  We shall have to make do with the human female’s boring old gingerbread.  I helped her make them the other day, and it was dull, dull, dull.  Measure this, mash that, stir the other.  Huge yawn.

See!  Look how boring they are:

Gingerbears (or -saurs)  Makes about 8 dozen balls or slightly fewer cut-outs.

Beat thoroughly:
1 c Crisco (solid vegetable shortening)
1 c white sugar
1 c molasses
1 egg
3 Tablespoons white vinegar

Sift and add.   (Dough will be stiff, and if you double or triple the recipe, you will need to use your hands!

4 c all purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 Tablespoon ground ginger (no mistake–1 T)

Chill overnight or freeze 3 hours.  Roll out on powdered sugar-covered board, cut out.  Dough is fragile.   Alternatively, roll into walnut- to golf-balled sized balls if you are lazy, like the human female.  Bake at 375 F about 8 to 10 min.  Remove from oven when they are dry.  (Balls will puff, crack, and then deflate a bit; remove when the insides of the cracks are dry.)  Roll thick and slightly underbake for chewy cookies.  Roll thin and bake well for crispy.  Keep unused dough in fridge.  Chill thoroughly if it starts being too soft.

Store in air-tight container.  Add a slice of bread to help them stay moist if you like them chewy.   Decadent hint:  two cookies + ice cream + freezer= gobbleworthy ice cream sandwiches.

……………………………….

The only fun thing about these is the way I have induced the molasses manufacturers to package it in such a way that one jar is not enough for a double batch of these and two jars is too much.  Oh, and the way the measuring tablespoon is too big to fit into the jar of ginger…

And I may have kicked some flour all over the counter.

    1. Do try the cookies. They weren’t as good as the bacon rolls or the orange-ginger-cranberry quick bread the human female made, but they weren’t awful.

      1. I also need to ask your Sigynificant Other and/or human female about ridiculously long flower names. Like Night Blooming Jasmine or Jack in the Pulpit, but loooonger, if they could spare a moment.
